winnipeg blue bomber factoids

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers got their name in 1936, when a Winnipeg Tribune reporter named Vince Leah referred to the team as the “Blue Bombers of Western football” in an article about their exhibition game against the University of North Dakota. The name was a reference to American boxer Joe Louis, who was known as the “Brown Bomber.” The name stuck, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have been known by that name ever since. The team’s colours are blue and gold, and their logo features a blue bomber plane.

  • The team was originally called the Winnipeg Rugby Football Club, but changed their name to the Winnipeg Football Club in 1930.
  • The team’s colors were originally blue and white, but changed to blue and gold in 1936.
  • The team’s logo features a blue bomber plane, which is a reference to the Royal Canadian Air Force, which was based in Winnipeg during World War II.

Factoids: “Hot chicken (or Nashville hot chicken) is a type of fried chicken that is a local specialty of Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States. In its typical preparation, it is a portion of breast, thigh, or wing that has been marinated in a water-based blend of seasoning, floured, fried, and finally covered in a paste or sauce that has been spiced with cayenne pepper. This method of preparation originates within African American communities in the Southern United States. A richly pigmented seasoning paste gives the fried chicken its reddish hue. Spice blends, preparation methods, and heat intensity vary from recipe to recipe depending on the chef. There are many restaurants in Nashville that serve a variant of the dish, and there is a citywide festival and competition celebrating it. The popularity of hot chicken has spread beyond the Southern United States due to the influence of Nashville’s music industry” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_chicken)

It is typically slow-smoked over wood (usually outdoors); indoor variations use a slow cooker. The meat is then shredded manually and mixed with a sauce. It may be served on bread as a sandwich, or eaten on its own… Pulled pork, almost always a shoulder cut, is commonly slow-cooked by first applying a dry rub, then smoking over wood. A non-barbecue method uses a slow cooker, a domestic oven, or an electric pressure cooker… Before cooking, it is common to soak the meat in brine; this process provides the extra moisture needed for a long, slow cooking process” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulled_pork)

Factoids: “A cheesesteak (also known as a Philadelphia cheesesteak, Philly cheesesteak, cheesesteak sandwich, cheese steak, or steak and cheese) is a sandwich made from thinly sliced pieces of beefsteak and melted cheese in a long hoagie roll. A popular regional fast food, it has its roots in the U.S. city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania… Philadelphians Pat and Harry Olivieri are often credited with inventing the sandwich by serving chopped steak on an Italian roll in the early 1930s. The exact story behind its creation is debated, but in some accounts, Pat and Harry Olivieri originally owned a hot dog stand, and on one occasion, decided to make a new sandwich using chopped beef and grilled onions. While Pat was eating the sandwich, a cab driver stopped by and was interested in it, so he requested one for himself. After eating it, the cab driver suggested that Olivieri quit making hot dogs and instead focus on the new sandwich. They began selling this variation of steak sandwiches at their hot dog stand near South Philadelphia’s Italian Market. They became so popular that Pat opened up his own restaurant which still operates today as Pat’s King of Steaks” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesesteak)

The complete assembly of a Chicago hot dog is said to be “dragged through the garden” due to the many toppings… The canonical recipe does not include ketchup, and there is a widely shared, strong opinion among many Chicagoans and aficionados that ketchup is unacceptable. Factoids: “The Library of Congress credits Danish immigrant Louis Lassen of Louis’ Lunch, a small lunch wagon in New Haven, Connecticut, with selling the first hamburger and steak sandwich in the U.S. in 1895… Louis’ Lunch has been selling steak and hamburger sandwiches since 1895, when Louis Lassen opened his lunch wagon. This small establishment, which advertises itself as the oldest hamburger restaurant in the U.S., is credited by some with having invented the classic American hamburger when Louis sandwiched a ground steak patty between two pieces of white toast for a busy office worker in 1900. Louis’ Lunch flame broils the hamburgers in the original 1898 Bridge & Beach vertical cast iron gas stoves using locally developed steel wire gridirons to hold the hamburgers in place during cooking (U.S. Patent #2,148,879). In 1974, The New York Times published a story about Louis’ Lunch claiming to have invented the hamburger. The U.S. Library of Congress’ American Folklife Center Local Legacies Project website credits Louis’ Lunch as the maker of America’s first hamburger and steak sandwich. The hamburger is still served today on two pieces of toast and not a bun” (https://en.wikipedia.org)
